Training Overview

Realizing the importance of Genetic algorithms especially for solving complex engineering problems a one day course was conducted under the umbrella of IEEE RAS Malaysia chapter activities. Foreign technical training program [FTTP] is one of most important knowledge enhancement program offered by the Department of Technical Education, Anna University, Tamil Nadu. The main focus is to give the top most students from various colleges a global advanced technical knowledge which they can apply in their daily working environment after they graduate. A group of more than 15 students accompanied by two faculty staffs attended this event.

The event started with the key note address from Dr. Irraivan, Associate Professor from UTP. Later Dr. Parasuraman and Dr. Ahamed Khan conducted the course which involves 50 – 50 theory and practical.

During the course the concept of GA and its main applications , implementation MATLAB support, with various case studies were discussed. The event ended at 5 pm.

Talk Overview
Since 2010, the demand for industrial robots has accelerated considerably due to the ongoing trend toward automation and the continued innovative technical improvements in industrial robots. In the last 10 years, the uptake of surgical robots, throughout the world especially in US, Europe including UK and Australia is extensive. In Asia, these machines are becoming popular with the hospitals in major cities and the usage is progressively increasing. The surgical robot has three components; console, patient cart and vision cart. The operation is performed by the surgeon through the robot. Robotic surgery has distinct advantages. It gives the surgeon a magnified 3D vision of the part requiring the operation and allows surgeons to do the procedure with great precision. Overall, robotic surgery allows the surgeon to perform a high quality operation for their patients. The introduction of minimally invasive techniques has transformed surgery in the past three decades. Patient benefits from mini-invasive surgery include less operative blood loss, less postoperative pain and consequently, reduced requirement of narcotics. RS for gastric cancer has been demonstrated to overcome intrinsic limitations of conventional laparoscopic surgery, thanks to the wristed instruments that allow multiple degrees of freedom, tremor filtering, three-dimensional vision, and a steady image, thus minimizing blood losses and surgical trauma and improving the surgeon’s dexterity when fine manipulation is required. This can be especially helpful during maneuvers in restricted fields and around major vessels, such as in extended lymphadenectomy. Many of these issues could explain the shorter learning curve of robotic gastric surgery compared to laparoscopy. In this talk the Trends in the market for Robot Industry and the evolution of modern techniques using Robotics in Surgery will be shared and potential future directions will be proposed.

At B.S. Abdul Rahman University, Faculty of Electronic and Instrumentation Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering, robotic subject is one of the main subject offered with many practical approaches. The main intention of providing this talk is to create interest in the field of robotics focused towards medical side.


The event started at 11 am with a key note address from the Head of Department Dr. Najumunissa Begum & the Dean Dr. Kajamohideen. During the key note address the Head and the Dean introduced the event speaker Dr. Ahamed Khan. Later Ahamed Khan briefed the audience [40 Degree level students and 4 post graduate students, 6 faculty staffs] the latest trends in the field of medical robotics.


The event ended at 1.30 pm.

At B.S. Abdul Rahman University, Faculty of Engineering, an awareness to have an Engineering society as a faculty subject for all the division students was initiated. In the engineering professional world, creating a good network to build a strong career is a must. It is important for those enrolled in this subject to know the value of a professional society and gain knowledge- how to enroll and get maximum benefit out of it.

The event started at 10 am with a key note address from the Head of the department Dr. Najumunnisa begam and the Dean Dr. Kajamohideen .During the key note address the Dean introduced the event speaker Dr. Ahamed Khan. Later Ahamed Khan briefed the audience [200 Degree level students and 10 faculty staffs] the vision, mission and the complete IEEE organization structure and its benefits.

During the speech Dr. Ahamed Khan motivated the students to be an Integral part of the society. During his talk the value behind RAS [Robotic and Automation Section] society and the importance of having B.S. Abdul Rahman university, IEEE Students Branch also addressed. This information was well received by all the students. More than 100 students showed keen interest to register for IEEE membership. The event ended at 11.30am.

The department of Intelligent Computing and Analytics (ICA), Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FTMK), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) have experience in organizing robotics competition known as Roborace for 10 years since 2008. For the record, the ICA department offers a degree Bachelor of Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) in which one branch of this field is robotics. Events such as this competition can contribute in shaping students who excel in creative and innovative skills. The committee of volunteers of the program itself consists of students in Bachelor of Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence). Through this program the values of leadership, problem solving, communication skills and other soft skills which can be applied within the students of the ICA Department.
For the first time the Department of Computing and Intelligent Analytics (ICA), the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FTMK), UTeM cooperate with the Company Melaka Taming Sari Sdn Bhd (MTSB) in a robotics competition organized in conjunction with the 9th anniversary of Menara Taming Sari. Department of ICA is pleased to jointly organize and provide advice to MTSB for organizing ‘Menara Taming Sari Berhad & UTeM National Roborace Challenge 2017’. The competition is open to school students in Malaysia. The competition program will be conducted one day. The program is expected to provide a useful exposure to the students about robot contests in particular, and the importance of problem solving skills, strategic planning, leadership, knowledge and teamwork in information and communication technology industry in general.

This time there were 23 teams, each has 3 students:

Event Summary

Human walking is a very complicated movement. The complexity of walking occurs because it is not a single joint movement, but it is associated with different heterogeneous biomechanical mechanisms in the stance phase of gait cycle . A person’s way of walking or running is normally described as his/her gait. The stance and swing phases are the two main phases of the gait cycle. To measure plantar pressure, only the stance phase is taken into account whereby only during that phase that the limb is in direct contact with a sutalk.pporting surface. Cadence and walking speed form part of the two main spatiotemporal characteristics of the gait cycle. Cadence is described as the number of steps per second while the walking speed is the total distance covered over a specific period of time. The stride length is the distance travelled by one leg during one gait cycle and consists of the right step and left step. The normal stride time for a normal person is equal to 1 second while a healthy person’s walking speed is about 4 km/hr. The plantar pressure distribution on the foot for each person varies according to the foot configuration and as the whole body. Gait conditions for diabetic patients are most associated with usually high plantar pressure as the main risk factor for diabetic foot ulcers. High plantar pressure is the last stage in the process leading to the occurrence of diabetic foot ulceration along with other several factors.A research was conducted to study the plantar pressure distribution during gait for diabetic patients and the results were presented during the conference
At Government college of engineering, Salem, India an International conference on Advances in Robotics, Energy and Network systems [ICARENS 2017] was organised by Department of Technical education DOTE, Tamil nadu, sponsored by TEQIP-II. During this conference Dr.Ahamed khan was invited as presenter to deliver a talk. The research technical talk was presented in front of more than 300 students and staffs of various engineering colleges. The knowledge gained was useful for the students in terms of carrying out their research in the similar field.
