When we think of robots, we think of giant machines that build cars and Hollywood creations too impossible to be real. Robots are in our everyday lives in many ways, from automatic pool cleaners to toys for kids. Today, educators are using robots and robotics to teach their students in novel ways. Robots are an engaging, hands-on way of teaching children important concepts like math and science. While the robots used in classrooms don’t shoot lasers out of their eyes, they are quickly becoming a popular way to catch and keep a classroom’s attention. Robotics can also be a fun stepping-stone for getting a child interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects that can lead to amazing careers later in life.

The event started by a welcoming speech by Mr. Mohd Fauzi, EXCOM of IEEE Robotic and Automation chapter, Malaysian section. The main focus of the event was to expose young kids from age 6 to 12 years old to basic of engineering, robotics and coding. This workshop’s mission was to observe their interest in Robotics and Engineering by teaching them via hands-on methods. A total of 19 participants attended the event with a total exposure of 6 hours to complete the robot building. Robotis product were used and the event programme is divided into 2 sections which are robot building and robot programming. 5 different robots were introduced in this event. The robots are included with a light sensor, servo/dc motor, switches, Bluetooth module and sound sensor. After the robot building activity, they are given a chance to play with their robot and several simple challenges like hitting the ball were set. In the event, an advanced robot module with various features were demonstrated to the participant.

The highlight of the event was a talk by Vice chairman of IEEE Robotic and Automation chapter, Malaysian section. During the talk Dr. Mohamed Khan brief the participant on the robot and its functions. Dr. Mohamed Khan took this opportunity to inspire the participant on the excitement in robotic works and the science, technology, engineering and mathematics in general. All the participants received certificate of participation by IEEERAS Malaysia chapter.
The event ended at 5.00 pm on the 19th August 2018.

Poster Competition on Power Management
Topic: Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency by Poster Submission 2018.
Venue | : | UCSI University, Block G 415 |
Date | : | 1 August 2018 |
Time | : | 5.00 pm – 7.30 pm |
Event Organizer | : | Dr. Mohamed Khan, IEEE RAS Malaysia chapter Vice chairman , IEEE UCSI Student branch counsellor & Ms. Kalaiselvi Aramugam , Lecturer UCSI, FE. |
Sponsored by | : | IEEE RAS Malaysia chapter |
Description & Objectives of the Event:
Energy conservation is the act of saving energy by reducing a service. In other words, to conserve energy, you need to cut back on your usage. Energy efficiency is defined as saving energy, but keeping the same level of service. For example, if you turn off the lights when you leave a room, you are practicing energy conservation. If you replace an inefficient incandescent light bulb with a more efficient compact fluorescent bulb, you are practicing energy efficiency.
- Energy conservation and energy efficiency are both ways to reduce consumption of energy, bringing the cost of electric bills down, and making less impact on the environment.
- The main objective of this event is to come out with an idea to use energy calculator as a self-assessment tool to determine where energy inefficiencies are occurring and where improvements can be made.

Report summary:
The event started with a welcoming speech Ms. Kalaiselvi Aramugam and followed up by an introductory talk delivered by the IEEE UCSI student branch counselor Dr. Mohamed khan. There are eight groups involved; each group consists of 3 to 5 members. All the students are in the final year of their Electrical engineering degree and power system is one of the core subject. Their individual contribution effort also contributed to one of their assignments. Each group is allocated with max 15 minutes duration for the presentation and 5 minutes for Question and answer session.

Marks are evaluated based on Abstract, introduction and purpose, methodology, tables and analysis, pictures and ideas, summary and conclusion, presentation and clarity of the poster. Assistant Prof Dr. Mohamed khan and Ms. Kalaiselvi took the responsibility of being the panel judges for the competition.
Through out the competition students demonstrated their skills, ideas and knowledge and showed great interest. The knowledge gained during their regular class works were also utilized well during the session. Total marks obtained by the individual group were evaluated by the two panel judges and the best group was awarded the first prize. Cash money worth of rm 100 was awarded to the best team.. The session ended at 7.15 pm with the conclusion talk from the branch counselor Dr. Mohamed khan. Later certificates were awarded for all the participants by Ms. Kalaiselvi and Dr.Mohamed Khan , and also special certificates were given for the first prize winners. 2
